Ecology of Human Health

By June 9, 2025Articles

This month our focus is on human Internal Ecology.

Ecology means the relationship between organisms and their environment.

So your internal ecology is the relationship between your cells, tissues, glands with it’s environment.

Your internal environment is made up of our thoughts/emotions, chemicals/toxins and our structure/alignment.

The quality of your environment has a direct impact on the quality of your cells and therefore your overall health.

Chiropractic’s role is to remove interference to allow for your neurology to be free of interference and thus help your internal ecology thrive.

In addition, here at CCK we are dedicated to increasing your awareness to what makes up your environment and empowering you with knowledge to make positive changes.

This months newsletter dives into various ways we can assess, support and bring balance to your internal ecology.

Germ Theory

I don’t know if you noticed, but a few weeks ago we had a surplus of water in Coast Chiropractic Kawana!?! A pipe burst from the water filter and gradually filled the practice whilst Cyclone Alfred huffed and puffed.

During the (ongoing!) response to this lovely surprise, we have had a lot of discussions about mould. It’s no surprise that once water gets into an area that it shouldn’t, you need to be mindful of mould and its effects, especially in a subtropical environment.

We have been regularly testing for mould in our practice and will continue to do so until the repairs and replacements are finished. What’s interesting is that when the reports come back, it is clear to see that the mould grows differently in different areas of the practice. It got me thinking about the germ theory….

The germ theory posits that many infectious diseases are caused by microscopic microorganisms, also known as pathogens or germs. While this can be true for some circumstances, (wash your hands!) I don’t think it is a complete theory. Like the mould in our practice, germs have an affinity for certain circumstances. The ability for a germ to have an effect on someone’s health doesn’t just rely on the presence of the germ itself, but also on the susceptibility of it’s new host. This theory is called the terrain theory.

Terrain theory, also known as the internal milieu theory, suggests that the body’s internal environment (the “terrain”) is the primary factor in determining whether an individual will get sick, rather than external pathogens themselves.

My favourite part about Terrain theory is it empowers us to be in charge of our health. We are not completely at the whim of the pathogens in our environment but rather we can use our exposure to pathogens as a way of strengthening our immune systems.

For example, instead of just allowing the mould to cover CCK after the flooding, we made the environment within CCK less accommodating. We dried out the practice, we treated it with substances that kill mould, we applied sunshine and fresh air and are replacing parts of our fitout to prevent a reoccurrence of mould.

In the same way, we can focus on looking after the terrain of our bodies. We can eat well, drink enough water, exercise, sleep well and of course look after our nervous system with chiropractic care.

As we head into winter, a time when colds and flu can catch up with us, what are you doing to ensure the terrain of your body can cope with an increase in exposure to pathogens? If you want some ideas, don’t hesitate to ask your favourite Chiropractor at CCK- they’ll point you in the right direction.

Internal Ecology Checklist

1.Thoughts: Bring awareness to internal dialogue – notice what stories are on “repeat” in your mind and also in your language with others. Is it supportive of growth? Is it limiting? Is it empowering? Is it victim based? We offer Neuro-Emotional Technique (NET) to help remove stress and blockages from thought and emotions.

2. Chemicals: Assess your chemical environment (what you consume / breathe in / put on / clean with). Choose one to upgrade to a clean, toxic free product. We have a wealth of knowledge when it comes to toxic free living … ask us!

3. Physical: Bring awareness to your posture whilst sitting, standing and sleeping. Do you cross your legs, need a wedge, are you standing balanced, do you have the right pillow? Ask for your personalised sitting, standing and sleeping assessment on your next visit.

Here at CCK we have tools and wisdom to help you with each of these areas … yes in addition to your amazing adjustment.
