Innate is Boss

“Ouch”, I said as I banged my foot on the corner of the front door the other day. It hurt and I looked down to see blood coming from the hole that this injury had created. Then I went into a scolding tirade of myself. “You stupid idiot. Your should have looked where you were going. You clumsy clot. You brain dead moron” and other more colourful and self berating terms exited my mouth as I chastised myself for my lack of attention to where I had placed my hoof relative to the door.

Then I remembered the reality and the beauty of life. I wiped up the blood and thought “thankyou Innate, I’m glad you are at work so now, go do your good thing”. You might ask “What’s this Innate thing that Mark is talking to. Surely the silly man needs to go to the hospital and get it fixed up”? Well I’m glad you did ask otherwise I wouldn’t be writing this note to you.

Back in 1895, D.D. Palmer the developer of chiropractic asserted that life’s vital functions are controlled by an Innate Intelligence. Now, this wasn’t a new observation. It had been stated by wise people for thousands of years before then but D.D. recognised the importance of this power and it became one of the fundamental premises of chiropractic.

Innate is the organisational force in living systems. It could be called the life force. The force that orchestrates the egg and sperm to produce the 40 quadrillion cells that you and I are. This allows us to function in harmony with our environment. Yes, the power that makes your body regenerates and maintains your body.

This is always the case as long as these two situations are upheld;

  1. The material it needs to work with is present. For example, if a person has lost an organ or limb, Innate wont grow another one.
  2. There is no interference or block to Innate’s expression.

When considering interference factors DD Palmer described Toxins (chemical), Trauma (physical) and Thoughts (Autosuggestion) as being the three T’s that cause living forms to subluxate in order to adapt. One of the major interferences to life expression is subluxation. Under the heading of thoughts, DD identified the Educated brain as a particularly troublesome factor when it comes to Innate flow. According to Palmer, “Educated bothers and worries Innate when trying to direct. Educated can get in the way of Innate and prevent it from weaving its magic. Innate knows far more than Educated will ever know.”

Your misperceptions and errors of thinking in your Educated mind (like yelling at yourself for stubbing your toe or making a mistake) cause disease as they mis-inform Innate. Palmer said that “self-talk” by Educated represented one of the primary causes of disease (along with the other T’s).

Maybe its only me but have you ever noticed yourself doing negative self talk?

Hmmmm! Now, how does this relate to me and my chiropractic care you may ask? When Educated perceives a threat in its environment it will go into a protection response. Protective behaviours, mediated by your brain and nervous system will adjust your body (including your spine) to a defensive position of fight or flight.

If the stressful environment is sustained i.e. a stressful relationship, job, community etc. your Educated responses will cause your cells, organs, tissues and spine to acquire defensive behaviours that adversely impact on your health. You can not be in growth and protection at the same time so if you are in protection your Innate Intelligence will throw its attention to healing and defending and will take its attention away from developing, growing and expanding.

Chiropractic adjustments perform wonders in alleviating these subluxated states BUT if you return to the same environment of toxic auto-suggestions and the other ‘T’s” your Innate will continue to perceive a need for protection that will return your body to its subluxated condition. The challenge, therefore is for you to, in addition to the adjustments that the chiropractor gives that you either change your environment or alter your perceptions of it. This will allow your Innate to be free to do its thing.

Now, back to ‘Educated’…

Words are the way you represent the outside world to yourself. This allows others to share with your experience of life. Words have a profound effect on your life. Every word you utter to yourself, either aloud or silently has an impact on the way you function. Words are the mental food you eat – you consume them and turn them into who you are. Every word you generate either internally (say to yourself) or from outside (TV, radio, social media or others speaking) is a trigger for you to make meaning of, digest and act upon – your words become you.

Every Educated thought you have has an effect. Words shape you, they shape your relationships, they shape your family, they shape your community – in fact they shape your world.

Oh, and I woke up the next morning and noticed that while my Educated mind had been asleep over night my Innate Intelligence had been at work rebuilding my injured foot. It knew what cells to bring in to clean up the damaged cells. It knew exactly what types of cells to put where they were needed. It knew which bacteria and viruses to let in to clean up the waste, in what quantities and at what time. It knew the right amount of inflammation to produce with the right amount of fluid for protection and nutrition supply. It knew when and how to drain the waste and dead cells from the area. It knew the type of seal that it needed to protect this process in the form of a scab. The list goes on way beyond our educated mind’s ability to understand.

This little Innate thingo is on the job 24/7 and I am glad. I like my Innate. I think it is the BOSS. It knows what’s best and what’s needed.

I will minimise subluxations by being aware of the 3 T’s and will focus on getting my Educated out of the way. I will only entertain nourishing thoughts. I’ll make sure that I clear out interferences by getting adjusted regularly and above all I will trust my Innate Intelligence to do what it does so well.

How about you?
